Eric Severson

Eric Severson is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, affiliated with the College of Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research spans electric machines, power electronics, and magnetic levitation, with additional affiliations in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

• Research Interests: Focus on precision control of electric machines, magnetic levitation (bearingless motors/magnetic bearings), high-speed rotors, flywheel energy storage, vehicle/hydraulic system electrification, and sustainable energy conversion.

The research group's recent publications emphasize axial flux machines, multiphase winding design, and thermal management for power-dense systems. They explore applications in off-highway vehicle electrification and fluid-electric hybrid systems.

Advising & Grants: The group includes students Parth, Nishanth (now postdoc), Nathan Petersen (Grainger Power Engineering Graduate Award recipient), Tim, Divya, and Aravind. Grants include NSF STTR funding with Revterra for superconducting magnetic bearings and a DoE-funded project on ultra-efficient Combined Heat and Power technology.

Labs & Teams: The Severson Research Group actively engages in outreach, hosting 4-H youth for experimentation, and collaborates with institutions like ARL, UW’s ERC, and Revterra. Their work targets next-generation electric turbochargers, flywheel storage, and sustainable energy solutions.
