Alan P Bowling is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington. He holds a PhD from Stanford University and has held academic positions at Notre Dame and UTA since 2001. His research focuses on multibody dynamics, biomechanics, and robotics, with applications in cellular systems, legged robots, and medical devices.
Education: BS in Aerospace Engineering (UT Austin, 1988), MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Stanford, 1993/1998). Prior to academia, he worked at JPL and McDonnell Douglas.
Research interests include multiscale modeling of biomolecular systems, robotic manipulation dynamics, and smart medical devices like pressure ulcer prevention beds. His work integrates computational methods with experimental validation.
Recent publications emphasize computational efficiency in long-term cellular simulations, impact dynamics in robotics, and optical tweezers applications. He has received awards including ASME Fellowship, NSF Career Award, and teaching excellence honors.
Advises students in the Biomechanics, Robotics, and Dynamics (BRD) Lab, collaborating with UT Dallas and UT Arlington Nursing. Engages in outreach through NASA-related student projects like the Mars Rover Team.
