Edmond Richer, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies and Research at Southern Methodist University's Lyle School of Engineering. He holds a joint appointment in the Biomedical Engineering Program (UT Southwestern Medical Center and UT Arlington) since 2005. His research focuses on advanced haptic interfaces, medical robotics, soft robotics, and additive manufacturing. He leads the Biomedical Instrumentation and Robotics Laboratory and has secured funding from NSF, DOD, NIH, and NASA.
Education: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Dynamical Systems and Control) from SMU, and an Engineer’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Craiova, Romania.
Research interests span haptic systems, medical devices, and robotic control. His work bridges engineering and biomedical sciences, with notable contributions to dielectric elastomer actuators, tremor suppression systems, and 3D printing of active devices. Recent publications emphasize modular robotic systems, haptic feedback mechanisms, and biomechanical modeling.
Edmond has received awards including the ASME Engineer of the Year (2013), Outstanding Faculty Award (2010), and multiple grants. He serves as Technical Editor for IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics and has held leadership roles in ASME and institutional committees.
His lab, the Biomedical Instrumentation and Robotics Lab, develops cutting-edge technologies in medical robotics and soft actuators, with applications in diagnostics and rehabilitation.
