Alan Leslie is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus, affiliated with the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science (RuCCS). His research focuses on cognitive development, particularly the emergence of abstract concepts like causality, object permanence, and theory of mind in early childhood. He is renowned for his work on the theory of mind impairment in autism, identified during his time in London. Leslie’s lab employs behavioral experiments with infants and preschoolers, including studies with autistic children.
Education: PhD (D.Phil.) from the University of Oxford (1979/80), preceded by undergraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh. He previously held a Medical Research Council Senior Scientist position at the University of London before joining Rutgers in 1993. He has been a visiting professor at UCLA, University of Chicago, and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
His honors include election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2008) and Fellow status in the Association for Psychological Science. Research themes emphasize neurocognitive foundations of abstract thought and developmental disorders.
