Alan Kingstone is a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester (1990) and directs the Brain, Attention and Reality (BAR) Lab, pioneering methods in attention and cognitive ethology that bridge lab research with real-world human interactions.
Education:
- PhD, University of Manchester, 1990
His research integrates cognitive science with social attention, brain-behavior relationships, and extended reality. The BAR Lab employs techniques like eye tracking, brain imaging, and motion capture across populations including children, patients, and adults. Recent work explores how digital environments modulate attention, mind perception, and social behavior through VR and real-world experiments.
The 15 most recent publications span attentional mechanisms in VR, social cognition, and perceptual biases. Key themes include the interplay between gaze behavior, spatial awareness, and cognitive load, with applications to environmental psychology, autism spectrum traits, and human-robot interaction.
Scientific Awards:
- Donald O. Hebb Distinguished Contribution Award (2020)
- Royal Society of Canada Fellow (2012)
- Association for Psychological Science Fellow (2007)
- Distinguished University Scholar, UBC (2004)
- Killam Faculty Research Fellowship (2004)
- Killam Faculty Research Prize (2002)
Kingstone has held leadership roles including Head of UBC’s Psychology Department (2011-2014) and VP Research Advisor for SSHRC (2014-2020). He co-founded the Annual Review of Cognitive Neuroscience and served on editorial boards of top journals.
The BAR Lab at UBC investigates attentional dynamics through multidisciplinary approaches, involving collaborators like Dr. Tom Foulsham. Recent projects examine gaze signaling, social presence in VR, and cognitive strategies in joint tasks.
