Alan J Budney is Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Biomedical Data Science at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He serves as Director of the T32 Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Training Program in the Science of Co-occurring Disorders and Director of the Treatment Development and Evaluation Core at the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health (P30 Center of Excellence).
Dr. Budney earned his B.S. in Psychology with Honors from Pennsylvania State University (1981), followed by a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University (1989). He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Substance Abuse and Behavioral Pharmacology at the University of Vermont (1990-1993).
His research focuses on substance use disorders with particular expertise in cannabis pharmacology, phenomenology, and regulatory science. Dr. Budney's work spans prevention and intervention strategies, treatment development, and substance use etiology. He has pioneered research on cannabis exposure measurement, developing the Cannabis Exposure Index through social media data, and investigating the relationship between THC consumption and cannabis use disorders.
Analysis of Dr. Budney's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on cannabis research methodology, with particular attention to accurate measurement of consumption patterns, the impact of cannabis on physiological markers like cortisol, and the development of technology-based interventions. His work increasingly integrates ecological momentary assessment techniques and digital health approaches to address substance use disorders in real-world contexts.
Dr. Budney has secured substantial NIH funding for his research, including:
- T32DA037202-07 as PI: Science of Co-Occurring Disorders (2019-2024)
- R01DA050032-01 as PI: Leveraging Social Media to Develop the Cannabis Exposure Index (2020-2025)
- P30DA029926-10 as Director: Technology-based Treatments for Substance Use Disorders (2011-2021)
- Multiple additional R01, UG1, and K-awards as Co-I or Co-Mentor
As a mentor, Dr. Budney currently oversees Postdoctoral Fellow Cara Struble, Ph.D. He has served as primary mentor for multiple NIH-funded K-awards. His laboratory, the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health, focuses on developing and evaluating digital therapeutics that combine science-based behavior change interventions with state-of-the-art technologies to address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, with particular emphasis on cannabis-related research.
