Alan Dykes

Alan Dykes is an Associate Professor in Engineering Geology at Kingston University's Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, specifically within the Department of Civil Engineering, Surveying and Construction Management. His career spans over three decades, with a PhD from King's College London (1995) and prior roles at the University of Huddersfield before joining Kingston in 2007.

Research Focus: Specializing in landslide processes, peatland instability, and slope stability assessments, Dykes has conducted fieldwork across Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, and China. His work integrates engineering geology with geomorphological analysis, particularly examining peat slope failures, coastal cliff instabilities, and climate change impacts on geohazards.

Key Contributions: Dykes pioneered hand-held GPS mapping of peat landslides, developed peat stability classification systems, and challenged historical interpretations of the Vaiont landslide mechanics. His projects address flood hazard modeling in forested catchments and subantarctic peat failures, reflecting a global perspective.

Teaching: He instructs on Management in Construction, Structural Design and Construction Management, and related MSc/BEng programs. His academic affiliations include the Geological Society of London (Chartered Geologist since 2006).
