Alan Cairns (1930-2018) was a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), serving from 1960 until his retirement in 1995. He led the Department of Political Science as Chair from 1973 to 1980 and later held an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Waterloo. He earned a DPhil from the University of Oxford and held visiting roles at Harvard, the University of Toronto, and others.
His research focused on Canadian federalism, constitutional reform, Indigenous politics, and multiculturalism. Notable works include Charter versus Federalism (1992) and Citizens Plus (2000), the latter addressing Aboriginal-Crown relations. He was a key figure in the Hawthorn Commission (1960s) and the Royal Commission on Economic Union (1980s), producing influential analyses of Indigenous rights and constitutional priorities.
Awarded the Order of Canada and Royal Society of Canada Fellowship, Cairns received prestigious accolades like the Molson Prize (1982) and the Governor-General’s Award (1994). His scholarship reshaped debates on Canadian identity, federalism, and democratic governance, leaving a legacy in both academia and public policy.
