Alan Baylock is a Jazz Studies Professor and Director of the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas. He previously served as Chief Arranger for the USAF Airmen of Note and led the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra for 15 years. Baylock holds a B.M. from Shenandoah University (1990) and an M.M. from the University of North Texas (1994).
His research focuses on jazz composition, education, and advocacy for gender equity in jazz. He co-founded Brava Jazz Publishing to support women composers and arrangers in big band jazz. Baylock’s music spans collaborations with renowned artists like Melissa Aldana, Phil Woods, and Patti LaBelle, and is published by Alfred Music and ProJazzCharts.com.
Awarded a Grammy nomination for directing the One O’Clock Lab Band, he is also an active member of the Jazz Education Network. Baylock teaches at the National Jazz Workshop and advocates for inclusive jazz education through clinics and guest conducting engagements worldwide.
