Alan Baumler is a Professor of History at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), specializing in Modern Chinese History with a focus on opium, public health, aviation, gender, and military history. He serves as Director of the Asian Studies Program and coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives in Asian Studies. His research integrates transnational perspectives with close attention to historical narratives of resistance and modernization.
Education: PhD, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (1997).
Research interests include the intersection of gender and war through case studies of Chinese aviators, the role of aviation in national identity formation, and the socio-political dimensions of opium in Republican China. His work analyzes how technological developments like aviation and global drug systems intersected with state policies and cultural norms.
Recent scholarship highlights mass mobilization strategies during wartime and the transnational dimensions of aviation history. His publications demonstrate expertise in both primary source analysis and historiographical debates.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Modern Asia, East Asian masculinity studies, and Chinese history. Office hours are held in Jane E. Leonard Hall 304M with face-to-face (Mon-Thu 8 AM-2 PM) and remote options (Mon-Thu 2-4:30 PM).
