Alain Reiser

Alain Reiser is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. His research focuses on developing next-generation additive manufacturing processes, particularly at the micro- and meso-scales, and employs laser-based high-strain-rate micromechanics to study material behavior under extreme conditions. He completed his PhD at ETH Zürich in 2019, following an MSc (2012) and BSc (2010) from the same institution. Prior to his current position, he held postdoctoral roles at MIT (2021–2023) and ETH Zürich (2020).

His research spans three core areas: (1) structure-property relationships in alloys, (2) high-velocity particle impact dynamics, and (3) nano- and micro-scale additive manufacturing. Notable projects include optimizing steel powders for cold gas spray repair, studying microparticle impacts at supersonic velocities, and advancing electrohydrodynamic redox 3D printing techniques for submicrometer-resolution metal fabrication. His work bridges fundamental materials science with industrial applications, targeting improved manufacturing efficiency and material performance.

Recent contributions include a News & Views article in Nature Materials analyzing advancements in metal 3D microprinting and a study on multi-particle LIPIT (laser-induced particle impact testing) in Acta Materialia. He actively supervises student projects in cold spray mechanics, microparticle dynamics, and high-resolution AM. His lab employs advanced techniques like nanoindentation, finite-element modeling, and high-speed imaging.

Alain’s work emphasizes practical applications in infrastructure repair, energy storage devices, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Current student opportunities span semester projects, master’s theses, and research internships focused on cold spray repair, microparticle impact mechanics, and novel AM processes.
