Alain Arrault is a Research Professor at the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and holds an attachment to the Research Center on Modern and Contemporary China (CECMC) at the School for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (EHESS). Born in France in 1960, he holds a Master's in Western Philosophy (1985) and a PhD in Chinese Studies (1995). He previously served as a professor at the University of Liège’s Center for Chinese Studies (1996–2000) and as Director of EFEO’s Beijing Center (2001–2006). His research focuses on intellectual history of pre-modern China, the history of Chinese calendars, and historical anthropology of religions in Hunan province. He led the international research program “Taoism and Local Society” (2002–2005), funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation.
Key roles include membership in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ scientific committee for Asian institutes (2007–2017), EFEO representative to its Administrative and Scientific Councils (2006–2008; 2011–2017), and president of HCERES evaluation committees (2018). His fieldwork spans 16th to 20th-century religious practices, particularly through domestic statuary analysis in Hunan.
