Dr Al Edwards serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, working at the intersection of immunology and biochemical engineering to address healthcare challenges through engineering science approaches. His research spans biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and physics with a focus on translating academic discoveries into industrial applications.
Dr Edwards' primary research interests include Affordable microfluidic diagnostics and "µMicro" miniaturised microbiology, where he pioneers the use of Micro Capillary Film (MCF) for portable, low-cost point-of-care bioassay testing. His second major focus is on Engineering next generation vaccines, developing technologies for rapid, low-cost discovery and manufacture of engineered vaccines against emerging infections. His work combines fundamental research with commercialization expertise.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on microfluidic diagnostic devices, particularly using MCF for applications in blood testing, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and pathogen detection. The research demonstrates consistent innovation in creating affordable, field-deployable diagnostic solutions with applications in microbiology, hemostasis testing, and vaccine development.
Dr Edwards actively supervises PhD students, including Prince Philip Dwomoh Agyei (EngD CISDnS CDT), and welcomes new PhD applicants. His research group membership includes the Digital Health and Biomedical Engineering Institute for Life Sciences, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to solving healthcare challenges through engineering science.
