Akram Bakkour is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Chicago. He holds a BS in Neuroscience from Brown University, a PhD in Neuroscience from The University of Texas at Austin, and completed postdoctoral training at Columbia University. His research focuses on the intersection of relational memory and decision making, employing methods like functional brain imaging, eyetracking, computational modeling, and neuropsychological studies.
Key research areas include cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying how memory informs future decisions, with particular attention to value-based decisions and behavioral change. His lab investigates these processes through interdisciplinary approaches, including collaborations with clinical populations such as individuals with eating disorders. Current projects are supported by an NIMH grant exploring subjective value construction in normative and maladaptive decision making.
Recent activities include hosting lab members at the Society for Neuroeconomics (SNE) 2023 Conference and expanding the team through postdoctoral and graduate student recruitment. The Bakkour Memory and Decision Lab emphasizes translational research bridging basic cognitive neuroscience with clinical applications.
