Akira Sawa, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Director of the Johns Hopkins Schizophrenia Center. He holds additional appointments as Professor of Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Genetic Medicine, Pharmacology, and Mental Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying schizophrenia, mood disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease, integrating molecular biology, animal models, clinical studies, and neuroimaging.
Education: MD (1990) and PhD (1996) from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine, followed by a residency in neuropsychiatry.
Research emphasizes neuronal-glial interactions, adolescent brain maturation, and translational approaches using nasal biopsy-derived neurons, induced pluripotent stem cells, and patient-derived biospecimens. He leads multidisciplinary federal grants addressing early detection and intervention for major mental illnesses.
Honors include AAAS Fellowship (2024) and Association of American Physicians Fellowship (2020). He advises academic societies and charities in the US and UK.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Schizophrenia Center, fostering patient care, research, education, and public outreach for psychotic disorders.
