Dr Akira O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of St Andrews. He holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Leeds and has conducted postdoctoral research at Washington University in St Louis. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural bases of episodic memory judgments, particularly sensations like déjà vu and memory-expectation conflict. He employs fMRI, fcMRI, and experimental methods to explore decision-making processes in memory contexts.
Education: BSc (Psychology) and MSc (Health Psychology) from the University of Leeds, followed by a PhD on states of awareness and recognition. His postdoctoral work with Prof. Ian Dobbins advanced his expertise in neuroimaging and cognitive processes.
Research interests include the neural correlates of memory conflicts, the role of functional connectivity in memory decisions, and laboratory analogues of clinical phenomena like déjà vu. He has supervised PhD students Federico De Filippi, Rachel-Marie Weiss, and Nancy Zheng.
Awards include the Teaching Excellence Awards (2014, 2015) and the Chandler Screven Memorial Award (2021). His work bridges cognitive psychology and neuroscience, addressing both theoretical and applied questions in memory science.
