Akira Kawaguchi

Roles and Affiliations: Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science at The Grove School of Engineering, The City College of New York (CCNY). Affiliated with the CUNY Graduate Center. Served as Director of the Master of Information Systems (MIS) program (2009–2013) and Chair of the Computer Science Curriculum Committee (2007–2013).

Education: B.S. and M.S. in Administration Engineering (Keio University, Japan), M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Computer Science (Columbia University).

Research Interests: Focuses on database systems, distributed query optimization, network architecture, and cybersecurity. Notable areas include HyperD federated databases, PADMA bioinformatics, and marine traffic simulation. Also explores health informatics via wireless biometric systems and AI applications.

Recent Projects: Collaborations with Kyutech on 5G/6G networks, NASA-funded aerospace safety projects, and NYC Tech initiatives to double STEM graduates. Launched the Computer Science Co-op Program and Industry Day.

Grants and Awards: NSF grants (2018, 2020), NASA SBIR (2004), and recognition as 2019 NYC Tech Innovator. Honored with CUNY's Salute to Scholars (2001, 2008).

Labs and Teams: Leads the HyperD project, PADMA database development, and interdisciplinary work with civil engineering (asset management) and biology (immunity gene analysis).
