Akiko Shimamoto is an Assistant Professor at Meharry Medical College's School of Medicine, with joint appointments in Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology. Her research focuses on the intersection of neurochemistry, behavioral neuroscience, and psychopharmacology, particularly examining sex differences in stress-induced neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
- Education: BSc (Agricultural Sciences, University of Tsukuba), MSc (Forensic Toxicology, University of Tsukuba), PhD (Forensic Toxicology & Instrumental Chemistry, Kyushu University), Postdoctoral Fellow (Neurochemistry, Tufts University)
Her work explores biological sex influences on:
- Glutamate-glutamine cycle dysregulation in depression and addiction
- Mitochondrial bioenergetics in mental health disorders
- Neuroimmune interactions in Alzheimer's disease
- Stress hormone modulation of substance abuse vulnerability
Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding:
- Sex-specific neurotransmitter dynamics (2020 study on neuroimmune networks)
- Chronic stress effects on dopamine circuits (2018 cocaine response research)
- Glutamatergic astrocyte-neuron interactions (2016 depression model study)
Scientific recognitions include:
- NIDA INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship (2007-2008)
- APA Young Investigator Travel Award (2011)
- RCMI Research Enhancement Award (2016)
