Dr. Akhilesh Jha is a Physician Scientist at the University of Cambridge, serving as an MRC Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is an Associate Principal Investigator at the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute (VPD-HLRI) and contributes to the East of England Severe Asthma Network.
- Education:
- BSc in Molecular Medicine, University College London (2004)
- MBBS, University College London (2007)
- PhD in Respiratory Medicine, Imperial College London (2018)
Dr. Jha’s research focuses on respiratory immunology and translational human challenge models. He investigates how the respiratory mucosa responds to viral infections and air pollution in asthma patients, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets for inflammatory memory in chronic airway diseases. His work combines single-cell transcriptomics and epigenetic analysis to explore innate immune mechanisms.
Current projects include a £1.7 million MRC-funded study on "Mechanisms of Inflammatory Memory in the Respiratory Mucosa," which employs controlled human challenges with TLR7/8 agonists (R848) and air pollution exposure. Collaborations span the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the Air Pollution Lab in Vancouver, and institutions like Imperial College London.
- Scientific Awards:
- Royal Society of Medicine’s Young Respiratory Investigator of the Year
- MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2023)
Dr. Jha actively mentors early-career researchers as the founding chair of the Integrated Respiratory Research Collaborative (INSPIRE) and contributes to editorial roles in journals like Immunotherapy Advances and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
