Dr. Ajit Achuthan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Clarkson University's Coulter School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. He holds a B.Tech from Calicut University (1994), M.S. from Indian Institute of Technology (1998), M.E. from National University of Singapore (2000), and Ph.D. from Purdue University (2004). Before academia, he worked as a Mechanical Engineer at General Electric (2004–2009).
His research focuses on solid mechanics and advanced materials, particularly additive manufacturing of metals. Key areas include microstructure evolution in metals, mechanical property analysis, and computational modeling (e.g., crystal plasticity, FEA, molecular dynamics). Advanced tools like SEM, nanoindentation, and machine learning are employed for material characterization.
Notable awards include the A. F. Davis Silver Medal (2017) and NASA Glenn Summer Fellowship (2012). He has authored numerous publications on additive manufacturing processes, constitutive models, and material behavior. His work spans partnerships with institutions like the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and NASA.
Dr. Achuthan teaches courses such as Theory of Elasticity, Wave Propagation, and Aircraft Structures. His lab investigations include structural health monitoring and energy systems optimization, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to solve industrial challenges.
