Dr Aisling O'Sullivan is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Sussex's School of Law, Politics and Sociology. She holds a PhD in Human Rights Law from NUI Galway, an LLM from Durham University, and an LLB from the University of Limerick. Her research focuses on international human rights law, international criminal law, and the historical evolution of legal norms, with a particular emphasis on critical legal theory and archival research. She is co-author of Universal Criminal Jurisdiction in International Criminal Law: The Debate and the Battle for Hegemony (Routledge, 2017) and leads collaborative projects such as 'Internment on Trial' and 'Diplomacy and Advocacy,' exploring Ireland's role in shaping human rights frameworks.
Her teaching spans international law, human rights, and critical theory at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, emphasizing innovative pedagogical methods like visual learning and technology integration. She has held visiting positions at the University of Sydney and Trinity College Dublin, and remains active in academic networks including the Society of Legal Scholars and European Society of International Law. Awards include a Distinction in her Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
Her recent research examines Ireland's diplomatic engagement in human rights development during the 1970s and the legal legacy of the Ireland v UK case before the European Court of Human Rights, with findings contributing to debates on universal jurisdiction and hegemonic legal narratives. She also advises policymakers and media on archival research findings.
