Aimar Ventsel is an Associate Professor of Ethnology at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, holding a position in the Institute of Cultural Research since 2024. He has held academic roles including Senior Research Fellow at the University of Tartu and temporary professorships at institutions like North-Eastern Federal University. His research focuses on cultural anthropology, Siberian indigenous cultures, post-Soviet societies, and the intersection of cultural heritage with politics.
Education:
- PhD in Social Anthropology from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (2005)

Research Interests: Aimar’s work explores ethnic identity dynamics in post-Soviet contexts, indigenous rights in Siberia, and the role of popular music in cultural transformation. He has conducted fieldwork in Sakha (Yakutia) and Kazakhstan, examining topics like kinship systems, informal economies, and punk subcultures in Eastern Europe.
