- Education:
- PhD (2014), University of Toronto
- MASc (2009), University of Toronto
- BSc (2007), Middle East Technical University
Dr. Karataş specializes in combustion emissions, propulsion systems, and sustainable energy. His work focuses on flame diagnostics, hybrid-electric propulsion, and the application of optical techniques to analyze reacting flows. He explores soot formation in high-pressure environments and investigates biofuels to reduce carbon footprints in aerospace applications.
His research spans combustion science, aerospace engineering, and energy systems, with a particular emphasis on soot aggregate morphology, pressure-dependent flame behavior, and emission control technologies. Recent publications highlight numerical modeling of flame extinction and experimental analysis of CO2/N2 dilution effects.
Scientific Awards:
- G.N. Patterson Award (UTIAS award for best PhD Dissertation), 2014
Dr. Karataş contributes to education through courses like Basic Thermodynamics (AER 309) and mentors students in combustion research. He leads the Clean Energy and Combustion Research Group, aiming to develop cleaner propulsion technologies and address climate change through advanced combustion science.
