Professor Felix Aharonian holds the position of Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), leading the Astronomy & Astrophysics Section within the School of Cosmic Physics. He concurrently heads the High Energy Astrophysics Theory Group at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) in Heidelberg, Germany, as an External Scientific Member. His career spans prestigious institutions including Yerevan Physics Institute (1979–1991), the University of Chicago (1991–1992), and MPIK (1992–2006).
Education: Graduated from Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute (Nuclear and Particle Physics, 1975), earned his PhD there in 1979.
Research focuses on high-energy phenomena in the Universe, including cosmic gamma radiation, particle acceleration in supernova remnants, and multi-messenger astrophysics. Notable contributions include foundational work with the HESS collaboration, advancing understanding of cosmic ray origins and extragalactic background light.
