Agneta Mallén is a Senior Lecturer (part-time) at the Department of Sociology, Lund University, with a 50% affiliation at the City of Malmö's Labour Market and Social Affairs Administration. She specializes in criminology, focusing on citizen journalism's role in crime control, security, and fear of crime in isolated island communities such as Åland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland.
Her research explores the intersection of technology and crime, including sousveillance (bottom-up surveillance), the impact of citizen journalism on public discourse, and the challenges faced by prisoners in non-native language environments. She leads projects like Trygga Barnet, analyzing early coordinated interventions for at-risk youth in Malmö.
Mallén teaches criminology courses and supervises bachelor’s theses at Lund University. She has collaborated extensively with Nordic institutions on crime prevention and island community dynamics, funded by the Nordic Cooperation Council in Criminology. Her work addresses global goals related to justice and inclusion (UN SDGs 16), particularly in vulnerable populations like disabled children and island residents.
Publications span criminological methods, digital journalism ethics, and cross-cultural crime studies. She has engaged in media commentary on citizen journalism’s dual role in empowerment and privacy violations, appearing in outlets like Phys.org and Science Daily.
