Agnese Benzonelli is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeological Science at the Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge, with a Research Associate position at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.
- Material Culture
- Artefact Analysis & Technology
- Archaeometallurgy
Her research focuses on analytical chemistry and physical properties of ancient metals and glass. She has led studies on:
- Glass recycling patterns in Early Islamic maritime trade
- Color dynamics in prehistoric copper alloys
- Myth-busting corrosion resistance theories in Chinese Terracotta Army bronzes
Key publication trends include material sourcing (copper, glass), trade network analysis, and experimental replication of ancient metallurgical techniques. Her work frequently employs SEM-EDS, isotopic analysis, and colorimetric studies.
She collaborates with institutions across Israel, Egypt, Japan, and Argentina, and has contributed to archaeological projects in the Mediterranean, Aegean, and the Far East. Her laboratory research spans the Archaeological Science Laboratories at Cambridge, including specialized units like the Dorothy Garrod Laboratory for Isotopic Analysis and Henry Wellcome Laboratory for Biomolecular Archaeology.
