Professor Agelos Georgakopoulos is a full Professor in the Mathematics Institute at the University of Warwick, where he has been permanently affiliated since 2013. His office is located in B2.23 of the Zeeman Building in Coventry. He serves as the main managing editor of the Journal of Graph Theory since 2021 and was awarded the LMS Whitehead Prize in 2021 for his contributions to mathematics.
His educational background includes undergraduate studies in Electrical & Computer Engineering at NTUA (1997-2003) followed by a PhD in Infinite Graph Theory with Reinhard Diestel at Hamburg (2003-2007). He completed postdoctoral positions in Hamburg and Graz before joining Warwick.
Professor Georgakopoulos's research focuses on the rich interplay between graph theory and other mathematical disciplines. His work particularly emphasizes:
- Infinite and finite graphs
- Discrete Geometry
- Potential Theory
- Stochastic Processes
- Groups acting on graphs
- Random walks on infinite and finite graphs
His publication record demonstrates significant contributions to geometric group theory, particularly in the study of planar Cayley graphs, as well as important work connecting graph theory with probability theory through percolation and random walk studies. His research shows a consistent focus on the deep connections between discrete structures and continuous mathematical frameworks.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with:
- ERC Starting grant 2015-2020
- LMS Whitehead Prize 2021
Professor Georgakopoulos has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral researchers, including PhD students Bruno Federici, John Sylvester, Alex Wendland, Christoforos Panagiotis, George Kontogeorgiou, and Panagiotis Spanos. He has also hosted several postdocs including Matthias Hamann (Heisenberg Fellow), John Haslegrave, Jaehoon Kim (Leverhulme), and Florian Lehner (FWF). He teaches Combinatorics II (MA3J2) and has produced lecture notes for MA3H2 "Markov Processes and Percolation Theory".
He maintains an active research group at Warwick with connections to various international institutions, reflecting his collaborative approach to mathematical research.
