Afzal Ashraf is a Research Fellow in International Relations and Security at Loughborough University’s Centre for Conflict, Security and Terrorism. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Nottingham and remains a Visiting Fellow there. His academic career is complemented by extensive military, diplomatic, and security consultancy experience, including roles in the UK Armed Forces, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
Dr. Ashraf holds a PhD from the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on international security dynamics, gender in conflict, counter-terrorism strategies, and asymmetric warfare. Notably, he has analyzed Al Qaeda’s ideology, the role of drones in modern warfare, and policing challenges in conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
His work bridges academic and practical domains, informed by operational experience in humanitarian missions, Cold War deterrence, and counter-insurgency. He is a sought-after commentator, appearing on over 200 international media outlets annually and was nominated for the University of Nottingham’s 2018 Impact Awards for public engagement. His career also includes leading RAF training programs and cyber security consultancy.
