Afshin Marashi is the Farzaneh Family Chair of Iranian Studies and Professor at the University of Oklahoma’s David L. Boren College of International Studies. His research centers on cultural and intellectual history of Iranian nationalism, with a focus on transnational and global contexts. He directed the Center for Iranian Studies (2011–2020) and contributed to journals like the International Journal of Middle East Studies.
Research Interests: Modern Iranian cultural history, nationalism, transnational exchanges, Zoroastrian diaspora, print culture, and comparative modernities. His work bridges Middle Eastern Studies with global South frameworks, analyzing how Iranian identity interacts with colonial and postcolonial contexts.
Recent Trends in Articles: Recent publications (2023) emphasize Parsi-Zoroastrian economic networks and visual archives, extending his focus on diaspora communities. Earlier works (2010–2015) explored print culture, bookstores, and the role of poetry in shaping national identity.
Awards: Honorable Mention for the Hamid Naficy Iranian Studies Book Award (2020) for Exile and the Nation.
Grants & Labs: Co-editor of the University of Texas Press’ Connected Histories of the Middle East and Global South series. His work has been supported by editorial roles at Iranian Studies and the Association for Iranian Studies.
