Professor Adrienne Martin is a Professor of Development Studies and Director of Programme Development at the University of Greenwich’s Natural Resources Institute. She specializes in social and institutional aspects of agricultural development, natural resource management, and gender equity in development contexts. Her career spans over three decades, including roles as Head of the Livelihoods and Institutions Group (2001-2010) and leadership in programs like the People, Natural Resources and Livelihoods Programme (2008-2010). She has extensive international experience in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, focusing on rural development, capacity building, and policy analysis.
Her research interests include gender equity in agri-food systems, social impact assessments of sustainability standards, and institutional innovations for adaptive governance. Notable projects include evaluations of Fairtrade impacts, cassava value chain analyses, and studies on post-harvest loss reduction. She has advised governments and NGOs on agricultural policy and led multi-stakeholder initiatives to strengthen smallholder inclusion in global value chains.
Professor Martin holds a unique combination of academic and applied expertise, bridging research, policy, and practice. Her work emphasizes participatory approaches and has influenced development strategies in over 20 countries. She currently oversees programme development at the Natural Resources Institute, ensuring alignment with global sustainability goals.
