Adriane D. Lentz-Smith is an Associate Professor of History at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, with affiliations in the Kenan Institute for Ethics and Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies. She earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in 2005. Her research focuses on African American history, the Civil Rights Movement, and the intersection of race with U.S. foreign policy and global contexts. She directs the Ethics of Now Series and has held leadership roles such as Associate Chair of History (2019–2022) and Director of Undergraduate Studies (2013–2015). Her work challenges historical narratives through projects like The Slow Death of Sagon Penn: State Violence and the Twilight of Civil Rights (2020–2021), funded by the National Humanities Center. Awards include the Honor Book Award from the National Black Caucus of the American Library Association (2010). She advises students and engages in outreach through initiatives like Bass Connections' America's Sacred Spaces project. Her teaching spans courses on post-Civil Rights America, urban histories, and methods in historical inquiry.
