Adriana Helbig is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Pittsburgh and an affiliated faculty member in Cultural Studies, Women's Studies, Global Studies, and the Center for Russian and East European Studies. She is part of the graduate faculty, teaching courses on global hip-hop, world music, music and gender/sexuality, technology, and cultural policy. She founded and directs the Carpathian Music Ensemble, focusing on Eastern European music, including Jewish klezmer and Gypsy traditions.
- Research Interests: Romani music, postsocialist cultural policy, music piracy, race and migration, and global hip-hop.
- Affiliations: Kennan Institute (Washington DC), Humanities Center (University of Pittsburgh).
Her work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright, and IREX. She has published widely in journals like Yearbook for Traditional Music and Popular Music, and authored/co-authored books including Hip-Hop Ukraine: Music, Race, and African Migration (2014) and The Culture and Customs of Ukraine (2009).
