Adrian Mackenzie is a Professor of Sociology at The Australian National University's School of Sociology. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sydney and has held fellowships at Humboldt University (Berlin) and the Villum Foundation (Copenhagen). His research focuses on the intersections of technology, culture, and science, particularly in areas like platform sociology, biosensors, and data science transformations. He has authored influential books such as Machine Learners: Archaeology of a Data Practice and Wirelessness: Radical Network Empiricism.
Education: B.A., B.Sc., and Ph.D. in Philosophy (University of Sydney). Previous roles include Professor of Technological Cultures at Lancaster University and research positions at CESAGEN and the UK Economic and Social Research Council.
Research Interests: Platform sociology, biosensing practices in health, data science, and visual cultures of machine learning. Current projects include studies on smart city platforms with CSIRO and collaborations on biodiversity in urban fringes with the Fenner School and Woodlands and Wetlands Trust.
Scientific Awards: Villum Foundation Fellow (2015), Australian Research Council Fellowship (1997–2000).
Grants and Advising: Lead on ARC Discovery Project 'Re-imaging the Empirical' (2017–2021). Advising PhD students on biosocial dynamics of urban fringe sanctuaries.
Labs/Teams: Collaborations with Mitchell Whitelaw (ANU School of Art and Design) on digital biodiversity visualization and urban platform studies.
