Adrian Hayes is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences, combining academic research with extensive development practice. His work focuses on population dynamics, climate change, and sustainable development, particularly in Southeast Asia. He has held key roles in policy research and implementation, including advising the Indonesian government on family planning and decentralization of health programs. Hayes has collaborated with institutions like the World Bank, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and UN agencies, contributing to policy reforms in Indonesia, China, Nepal, and other countries.
His research emphasizes links between population policies, environmental sustainability, and health governance. Notably, he chaired the first IUSSP Scientific Panel on Climate Change (2012–14) and contributed to the Laxenburg Declaration on Population and Sustainable Development (2011), influencing global climate negotiations. He remains active in interdisciplinary initiatives through ANU’s Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions.
Hayes’ career spans over three decades, combining academic research with hands-on development practice. His consultancy work with UNFPA, UNESCO, and AusAID highlights his commitment to evidence-based policy. Current affiliations include membership in the American Sociological Association’s Climate Change Task Force and leadership in climate economics and policy research groups at ANU.
