Dr. Admire Nyamwanza serves as Lecturer in Health Systems and Climate Change at the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) at Queen Margaret University, a position he assumed in January 2025. With over 15 years of professional experience spanning both stable and fragile contexts across Africa, his work bridges climate science, public health, and social justice. His academic journey includes previous appointments at the University of Cape Town, Human Sciences Research Council (South Africa), and the Institute of Natural Resources, reflecting his deep commitment to addressing climate challenges in African contexts.
Dr. Nyamwanza holds a PhD in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester and a Masters in Sociology and Social Anthropology from the University of Zimbabwe. His research expertise centers on human health impacts of climate change, ethics in climate change and health research, climate risk management, resilience and transformative adaptation, and climate change-food security linkages. Methodologically, he specializes in transdisciplinary mixed methods research, participatory action research, impact assessment and evaluation, and applied research with engaged scholarship.
His publication record demonstrates remarkable productivity and impact, with numerous high-quality articles published in leading journals. Recent work explores cutting-edge intersections of climate justice and extractive industries (2025), psychosocial health impacts of climate adaptation (2023), transformative human development approaches to climate resilience (2023), and conceptual frameworks linking adaptation strategies with nutrition outcomes (2022). His research consistently emphasizes community-centered approaches, integrating diverse knowledge systems to develop contextually appropriate adaptation solutions.
Dr. Nyamwanza has secured significant research funding from major international organizations including Wellcome Trust, World Health Organisation, Grand Challenges Canada, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and South African government departments. His work demonstrates strong international collaboration, with field research experience across South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.
As an active member of the Development Studies Association (DSA), Adaptation Research Alliance, and The Adaptation Network, Dr. Nyamwanza contributes to broader scholarly and policy conversations on climate adaptation. His teaching at QMU focuses on the critical intersection of health systems and climate change, preparing the next generation of scholars and practitioners to address these complex challenges with both technical expertise and ethical commitment.
