Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adem Yulu is a faculty member in the Department of Geography at Iğdır University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, specializing in urban and regional geography with a focus on Eastern Turkey and Mount Ararat. His research examines socio-spatial dynamics, environmental challenges, and cultural heritage in high-altitude regions through interdisciplinary fieldwork and remote sensing.
His educational background includes:
- Doctorate in Geography from Istanbul University (2012-2018), thesis: "Geographic distribution of the automotive industry in Turkey"
- Master's in Geography from Istanbul University (2009-2012), thesis: "Urban development and spatial change in Iğdır"
- Licence in Geography from Istanbul University (2005-2009)
Dr. Yulu's research integrates Urban Geography, Environmental Geography, and Cultural Studies to analyze Mount Ararat's ecological systems, Kurdish nomadic communities, and tourism impacts. His work emphasizes sustainable development in vulnerable regions, combining ethnographic methods with geospatial analysis to address climate change adaptation and cultural preservation in Eastern Anatolia.
His 21 journal articles (2019-2024) reveal three dominant trends: (1) Environmental studies of Balıkgöl (Ağrı) focusing on pollution and land cover change; (2) Ethnographic documentation of cultural extinction on Mount Ararat; (3) Comparative analyses of informal settlements in Manila and Iğdır. These intersect through his examination of how climate change and urbanization accelerate socio-ecological transformations in border regions.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Evliya Çelebi Travel Writing Competition 2nd Prize (2023) for "The World of Others: Slum Neighborhoods of the Philippines"
Dr. Yulu leads TÜBİTAK-funded projects including "Sosyal Bilimlerde Etnografik Yaklaşım" and "Serhat İllerinden Doğayi Dinliyorum," while advising student research on geological heritage and environmental pollution. His administrative service as Department Head (2021-2022) and Erasmus Coordinator demonstrates institutional leadership. Current grants focus on nature education in Mount Ararat and cross-cultural responses to urban poverty.
He directs research teams for TÜBİTAK 2209-A projects and collaborates with Maden Tetkik Arama Genel Müdürlüğü on paleontological studies, maintaining active field research in Iğdır province and Mount Ararat's ecosystems.
