Adelphine Bonneau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sherbrooke, where her research bridges chemical analysis with archaeological and cultural heritage studies through interdisciplinary methodologies.
Her academic credentials include:
- M.Sc. in Applied Physical Measurements for Cultural Heritage Materials, University of Bordeaux III (2010)
- Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Quebec at Montreal (2016)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Laval University (2016-2018)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, UK (2018-2021)
Her research program integrates chemistry, archaeology, and history with core emphases on:
- Characterization and provenance of archaeological materials (pigments, glass)
- Development of advanced dating techniques (radiocarbon plasma extraction, luminescence)
- Material degradation analysis and conservation science
- Historical manufacturing techniques and trade networks (16th-19th century)
- Operational chains of rock art sites in Southern Africa and Canadian Shield
Current projects include pigment analysis for rock art (Through the veil), European glass bead studies (De pacotille à parure), and NSF-funded radiocarbon dating innovations (Archaeometry grant) alongside the DARQ dating method development (Audace grant), with fieldwork spanning underwater and terrestrial sites across Europe, Africa, and North America including Cartier-Roberval (Canada) and Blombos Cave (South Africa).
Her laboratory operations are conducted from Department of Chemistry facilities (Laboratory D1-2118, Office D1-2127-3) with research supported by competitive grants including NSF Archaeometry and Audace program funding.
