Dr Adele Webb serves as Research Fellow in Democracy and Citizen Engagement at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance, University of Canberra. Her interdisciplinary work bridges political sociology, political theory, and empirical political science to examine citizen perceptions of democracy and historical influences on democratic participation.
Webb's research centers on democratic ambivalence, analyzing how citizens navigate conflicting democratic values. She has pioneered studies on Philippine politics, populism, and post-colonial theory, with particular focus on middle-class political behavior and authoritarian nostalgia. Her monograph Chasing Freedom: The Philippines’ Long Journey to Democratic Ambivalence (2022) establishes foundational frameworks for understanding democratic complexity in post-colonial contexts.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent thematic focus on Southeast Asian democratization processes, integrating historical legacies with contemporary citizen subjectivities. Her work demonstrates methodological diversity through qualitative case studies, theoretical modeling of ambivalence, and comparative analysis of populist movements across democratic contexts.
Webb actively leads public engagement initiatives including the 'Connecting to Parliament' project facilitating citizen-official deliberations, and serves as convenor for the Co-design and Deliberative Engagement unit in the Master of Public Policy program. She maintains extensive media presence through ABC TV News, Lowy Institute publications, and international academic forums while consulting for UNESCAP and Griffith Asia Institute.
