Adele Goman

Dr Adele Goman is a Lecturer at the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University. She holds a PhD, MRes, and BSc(Hons) and is actively engaged in research related to hearing loss, public health, and geriatrics. Her work focuses on the intersection of hearing impairment with various health outcomes in older adults.

Dr Goman's research interests span hearing loss epidemiology, cognitive decline, social isolation, physical activity in older adults, and audiology service delivery. Her work demonstrates how hearing impairment affects multiple dimensions of health and quality of life among aging populations, with particular attention to interventions that can mitigate these effects. She examines the relationships between hearing loss and outcomes such as falls, cognitive decline, social isolation, physical activity levels, and mental health.

Her recent publication record shows a strong focus on the ACHIEVE (Aging and Cognitive Health Evaluation in Elders) randomized controlled trial, where she has contributed to multiple secondary analyses examining various health outcomes related to hearing intervention. These studies employ rigorous methodologies including accelerometry for physical activity measurement, comprehensive audiologic assessments, and analysis of social and psychological outcomes. Her work bridges clinical audiology with broader public health implications.

Dr Goman serves as Director of Studies for multiple postgraduate students including Ashleigh Gray, Millie Kirkwood, and Harini Madhu, and has supervised projects related to hearing technology, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation. She is involved in significant grant-funded research, most notably the £3.26 million COG-MHEAR project (2021-2026) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which aims to develop next-generation hearing aid technology.

Her collaborative work extends across multiple institutions, with frequent co-authorship with researchers from Johns Hopkins University, particularly Dr Frank Lin and Dr Nicholas Reed. She is affiliated with the Centre for Mental Health Practice, Policy and Law Research and the Health Technologies Research Group at Edinburgh Napier University.
