Dr. Adebowale Adeniran is Professor of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine, where he serves as Director of Cytopathology, Director of the Cytology Laboratory, Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship Program, and Director of the Anatomic Pathology Elective Program. His clinical expertise spans surgical pathology and cytopathology with a specialized focus on genitourinary pathology and thyroid disease diagnosis.
Dr. Adeniran received his medical degree from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, followed by anatomic/clinical pathology residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He completed specialized fellowships in surgical pathology (with emphasis on genitourinary pathology) at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and in cytopathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
His research program centers on the clinico-pathologic and molecular aspects of kidney cancer and thyroid cancer, with particular interest in translocation renal cell carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma. Dr. Adeniran has authored over 130 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, and co-authored two influential textbooks: "Common Diagnostic Pitfalls in Thyroid Cytopathology" and "Rapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE): A Practical Guide." His work bridges diagnostic pathology with translational research, focusing on improving diagnostic accuracy and understanding cancer biology.
Analysis of Dr. Adeniran's most recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on renal cell carcinoma biology, thyroid nodule diagnostics, and cytopathology methodology. His research team employs advanced techniques including molecular diagnostics, machine learning algorithms for marker selection, and detailed clinicopathologic correlation studies. A significant portion of his work addresses diagnostic challenges in specialized populations, such as transgender patients undergoing hormone therapy, and explores novel biomarkers for cancer classification and treatment response.

Dr. Adeniran serves as an editorial board member for Cancer Cytopathology and the Journal of Clinical and Translational Pathology, and regularly reviews for numerous peer-reviewed journals. He is actively involved in medical education as a member of the education committee of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and previously received multiple teaching awards from Yale's Department of Pathology. His research has been supported through institutional funding and collaborative grants with colleagues in urology, oncology, and cancer biology.
As Director of Cytopathology and the Cytopathology Fellowship Program, Dr. Adeniran oversees the daily operations of Yale's cytology services and provides mentorship to pathology residents and fellows. His laboratory work focuses on improving diagnostic accuracy in thyroid and kidney pathology through integration of morphologic, molecular, and clinical data. He collaborates extensively with the Yale Cancer Center and various clinical departments to advance precision pathology approaches.
