Adam Smith is the Edward Orsborn Professor of US Politics & Political History at the University of Oxford and Director of the Rothermere American Institute. His research focuses on 19th century American political history, particularly the relationship between political ideas and behavior, transnational perspectives on American history, and the history of theatre.
His educational background includes studies at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School followed by degrees from Oxford, Sheffield, Harvard, and Cambridge Universities. His research explores the historical development of conservatism, the politics of slavery, and the image of the United States in global context.
