Dr. Adam Packer is a Wellcome Trust Henry Dale Fellow and ERC Starting Grant awardee at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG), within the Medical Sciences Division. He leads the Packer Lab, which focuses on investigating the function of the claustrum, a poorly understood brain region with potential significance in information processing and perception.
Dr. Packer's research interests center around neural connectivity and brain function, with specific focus on:
- The role of the claustrum in multisensory integration
- Neocortical information processing
- Brain connectivity patterns
- Neural mechanisms underlying perception and decision-making
His current ERC-funded project, "Optical interrogation of the claustrum from synapses to behavior," aims to develop new approaches for monitoring and manipulating claustrum activity to understand its function in brain processing. This research leverages "recent advances in electrophysiological, genetic, optical, and behavioural tools" to address a significant gap in neuroscience knowledge.
Dr. Packer has received notable recognition for his work:
- Wellcome Trust Henry Dale Fellowship
- ERC Starting Grant (2019)
As part of his ERC project, Dr. Packer is recruiting Postdoctoral Researchers and Technicians to build his research team. His work represents an important contribution to understanding fundamental brain processes, with potential implications for broader neuroscience research.
Dr. Packer's laboratory, the Packer Group, is situated within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford, an institution ranked #1 for Anatomy & Physiology in the QS World Rankings for multiple consecutive years (2017-2025).
