Adam Ockelford is a Professor at the School of Education, Centre for Learning, Teaching and Human Development, University of Roehampton. He holds roles as Secretary of the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE), Chair of Soundabout, and founder of The AMBER Trust. His work focuses on music psychology, special educational needs, and cognitive aspects of musical development.
Education: Studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and earned a PhD in Music from Goldsmith's College, University of London (1993). His doctoral work introduced the 'zygonic' theory of musical understanding.
Research Interests: Explores musical development in neurodivergent populations, learning/memory/creativity, and the cognitive underpinnings of musical meaning. Notable projects include the Sounds of Intent framework for inclusive music education, Focus on Music syndrome studies, and Fragments of Genius on musical savant skills.
Collaborations: Works with institutions like Goldsmith's College, Institute of Education, Royal National Institute of the Blind, and charities Soundabout/AMBER Trust. Series editor for 'SEMPRE Studies in the Psychology of Music' (Ashgate).
