Adam Matthew Leventhal is a University Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences and Psychology, and Founding Director of the USC Institute for Addiction Science. He leads a $60M research program addressing youth tobacco/cannabis use, health disparities, and regulatory science, with publications in JAMA and New England Journal of Medicine.
Research focuses on tobacco/nicotine product appeal, addiction epidemiology in youth, behavioral pharmacology of withdrawal, and regulatory policy impact. Work identifies sensory and marketing factors influencing adolescent vaping progression and develops cessation interventions.
Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate strong emphasis on emerging nicotine products (pouches, Delta-8-THC), longitudinal patterns of adolescent substance use, and regulatory science. Research employs diverse methodologies including laboratory studies, cohort analyses, and policy evaluations.
