Adam M. Schor is an Associate Professor of History (Ancient Mediterranean) and Assistant Chair in the Department of History at the University of South Carolina, part of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Michigan (2004), with expertise in Roman and Late Antique history, medieval Byzantium, and social network theory.
His research focuses on the social and religious dynamics of late antiquity, including the formation of Christian clergy networks, epistolary collections of bishops, and comparative analysis of Roman-era clerical expertise. He has published widely on topics such as early Christian growth models, Theodoret of Cyrrhus's social networks, and the Apostolic Constitutions' role in clerical identity.
Teaching includes courses on premodern Western civilization, ancient Greece/Rome, Byzantine history, and the historical study of religion. He has received multiple awards, including the Michigan History Department Dissertation Award (2004) and the Peter and Bonnie McCausland Fellowship (2014–17). His current book project examines how Christian clergy structures developed from 2nd–5th centuries CE.
Professional leadership roles include service on the Byzantine Studies Association Governing Board, Carolina Core Curriculum Committee, and President’s Diversity Inclusion Advisory Committee. He also advises Jewish faculty/staff initiatives at USC.
