Adam Lidz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, particularly the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), large-scale structure formation, and intergalactic medium evolution. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University (2004) and a B.A. in Physics from the University of Chicago (1996). Before joining Penn in 2009, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
His research investigates how the Universe evolved from a smooth initial state to its current complex structure, emphasizing observational probes such as 21 cm fluctuations, gamma-ray bursts, and Lyman-alpha forest data. Key projects include modeling reionization-era hydrogen and helium ionization, analyzing cross-correlations between galaxy surveys and CMB signals, and developing analytic frameworks for emission line diagnostics. Lidz collaborates extensively on observational campaigns and contributes to instrument design for future missions like the Gamow Explorer.
His work bridges theoretical models with observational data, leveraging cosmological simulations and advanced statistical methods. Recent efforts include refining constraints on reionization timing, exploring fuzzy dark matter implications via 21 cm signals, and comparing simulations with JWST-era observations. He teaches courses on cosmology and order-of-magnitude physics at Penn.
