Dr Adam Brett serves as a Lecturer in Education at the University of Derby and holds a Visiting Fellow position at Nottingham Trent University. With 15 years of secondary school teaching experience including leadership roles as pastoral lead and EDI lead, he brings practical insights to his academic work.
His research focuses on creating inclusive educational environments with emphasis on:
- LGBTQ+ inclusion strategies in schools
- Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
- Practical implementation of diversity frameworks
Dr Brett's doctoral research specifically examined how schools can become more LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces, bridging his academic work with real-world classroom experience.
He co-founded Pride & Progress in 2020, which has evolved into an award-winning book, podcast series, research platform, and active community network for LGBTQ+ educators. The organization operates on the principle that educational spaces should be environments where "every person feels free to be themselves, feels safe, feels seen, feels supported, and feels like they belong."
At the University of Derby, Dr Brett works with both primary and secondary teacher trainees, preparing future educators to create inclusive learning environments. His work integrates his doctoral research with his extensive classroom experience to provide practical, actionable strategies for teachers.
