Achim Ohlert (1983-2024) was a renowned researcher at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, working in the Department of Geomagnetism (Section 2.3). He held a permanent scientific position, recognized for groundbreaking contributions to geomagnetic observatory operations and planetary magnetic field modeling. His work focused on Earth's magnetic field and pioneered models for Mars' magnetic environment, widely adopted globally.
Key roles included leadership at the GFZ's Niemegk Observatory and collaborations with international observatories in Iceland, Brazil, the Maldives, and Antarctica. His projects spanned diverse locations including Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, and Schiltach in Germany's Black Forest. Colleagues highlighted his collaborative spirit, technical expertise, and dedication despite battling leukemia. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
Achim's legacy includes advancing observational infrastructure and fostering international partnerships in geophysics. His untimely passing at 41 has left a profound impact on the global geoscience community.
