Achim Brauer

Achim Brauer is a Professor at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, where he previously headed the Section for Climate Dynamics and Landscape Development and served as Director of the Geoarchives Department. As a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, his research specializes in environmental and climate history with a focus on paleolimnology, using sediment analysis to reconstruct past ecological conditions.

His research investigates climate dynamics during the Quaternary period, using lake sediments as archives of past environmental changes. He develops innovative methods for accurate paleoclimate reconstruction, including microthermometry of fluid inclusions and multi-proxy biomarker analysis. His field studies span diverse environments from the Eifel Maars to the Eastern Mediterranean.

Brauer's publications demonstrate expertise in high-resolution climate reconstruction techniques. Recent work focuses on seasonality patterns in glacial periods, regional hydroclimate variations, and the validation of temperature-sensitive proxies. His research group advances methodologies in tephrochronology and sediment core analysis for improved chronological control.

He received the DEUQUA Medal of Merit in 2024 for outstanding contributions to Quaternary research. His team collaborates internationally on projects like the TERENO observatory network and ICLEA Virtual Institute, developing interdisciplinary approaches to climate science.
