Achim Hurrelmann is a Professor of Political Science at Carleton University and Co-Director of the Centre for European Studies. He is cross-appointed to the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) and has previously held leadership roles as Chair of the Department of Political Science (2021–2024) and Director of EURUS (2014–2018).

His research centers on the politics of the European Union, focusing on political discourses about integration in parliaments, media, and among citizens, as well as issues of democracy and legitimacy within the EU framework. He has also explored the implications of Brexit on Canada-Europe relations, contributing to debates on the 'Eurosphere' versus 'Anglosphere' in Canadian public opinion.
Achim co-authored the textbook European Union Governance and Policy Making: A Canadian Perspective (2nd ed., 2023) and has published extensively in leading journals such as European Journal of Political Research, Journal of European Public Policy, and West European Politics. His work often bridges empirical and theoretical analyses, examining topics like the politicization of EU trade agreements, legitimation dynamics during the Eurozone crisis, and the theory of European integration.
He has secured significant research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the EU’s Erasmus+ Programme, including grants for the Jean Monnet Network on Transatlantic Trade Politics and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Carleton University. His project on Reconfiguration of Canada-Europe Relations after Brexit (2019–2024) involves collaborations with scholars like Petra Dolata, Patrick Leblond, and Frédéric Mérand.
